Now I feel REALLY old if you think 2005 was the infancy of the web! if only you know how bizarre it was back in 1995.... This shiny new thing called "windows 95" came out and made surfing the web easy access to anyone. It really strikes me how many people are not taking the route you describe and are instead going the "Snow Crash" living much of their lives in a virtual world route. That book seemed so far fetched when I first read it in the early 90s.
